Shower Chair

A shower chair lets you sit while bathing, which reduces fall risk and fatigue during early recovery. Set it up safely and follow bathing instructions from your surgeon or PT.

Important considerations

  • Do not use if chair legs wobble or locking buttons fail.
  • Avoid bathing alone if you feel dizzy, weak, or unsteady.
  • Follow hip, knee, or shoulder precautions during all bathing movements.
  • Stop if you notice increased pain or incision irritation after showering.

How to use

  1. Place the chair on a level, non-slip shower surface with all feet fully contacting the floor.
  2. Adjust height if your model allows, so your feet rest flat and knees are comfortable.
  3. Sit before turning on water; keep grab bars or a handheld shower within reach.
  4. Wash in sections to limit twisting and reaching behind you.
  5. Stand up slowly only if your therapist has cleared standing showers.
  6. Dry the chair legs and tips after use to reduce rust and slipping.

Tips & tricks

  • Use a long-handled sponge for feet and lower legs while seated.
  • Keep shampoo and soap at arm's reach in front of you.
  • Have a towel and non-slip path ready before you start.
  • Ask a caregiver to stay nearby during your first few showers if recommended.

Good to know

  • Seated showering is common for the first weeks after many orthopedic surgeries.
  • A stable chair can conserve energy while you follow incision-care routines.
  • Your PT may clear standing showers as balance and strength improve.
